S-U Schools

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods

"On, 10-22-02. I was there about 1 1/2 hrs. Was your impression good or bad overall? Great! I stopped by the main campus since I was early for my meeting at the equine school, and the main campus was beautiful! I went to IUPUI and am used to seeing the standard, harsh, kind of "cold" interiors and the main hall here was just gorgeous. The equine facilities were beautiful as well. Lots of space. I didn't look at the campus as thoroughly as I would have if I were interested in attending on campus. I'm going for there WED program. Everything seemed very neat and orderly. It felt great just being there. I met with Dr. Marks,! I believe she is the head of the equine department. She was GREAT! Very comforting to talk to someone who seemed so interested in my future. Definately knowledgeable and knew where I was coming from and what I was going through. How was everyone in answering your questions? Great, as well. She couldn't answer some of the specific distance education questions, but that isn't her department and it is a new program. But I came with a list of questions printed up and she answered all of them and more! Did the horses look healthy and happy, or depressed and strung out? I didn't see hardly any of them in the stables. They were all turned out and munching on their grass which was pleasantly surprising! I was worrie! d that the horses at a school like this would all be kept in for convenience. How close in the center to the campus? RIGHT down the road. Mileage I don't know, but all you do is go onto the main road right in front of the campus and it's maybe a minute down the road. How did the town look? I didn't go into town. The general area though seemed very nice. I think that SMWC is kind of on the outskirts, so I was right in town, which was nice. I believe it's close to Terre Haute, which has lots to do. Anything else? I am going to be attending their WED (distance education program) Although it is a new program, they were very helpful and it seems like a realyl great program. The good part is that they offer APL for prior learning. You can "APL" out of classes that have basic horse skills that you may have known for years, so it saves some money. I'm very excited to FINALLY find a distance ed equine business management program from a CREDIBLE university. I do feel more comfortable obtaining my degree from SMWC instead of a foreign mail order program, although I haven't tried those. Overall, I'm very impressed and look forward to attending! Also... I live in Indiana, maybe 1 1/2 hrs from there. Too far to travel every day, but I can also be on their equestrian team which is fantastic!" - Danielle

SUNY Cobleskill

"Cobleskill has some good professors, but their facilities aren't anywhere near as good as Cazenovia's or SUNY Morrisville's. One professor that I know personally is Dr Steve MacKenzie, he focuses on Equine behavior and uses that to develop his training methods. He is really good and if you ever get to hear one of his lectures I would highly recommend doing so." - Anon.

SUNY Morrisville

"The other college in NY is SUNY Morrisville. Very good place~ great facilities, many disciplines and great horses, and the faculty is wonderful also. This college and Caz are the best two in NY in my opinion. They just added on to their facilities also and are probably going to do so again soon. Spike Holmes works out of Morrisville's Equestrian program and he is another horsie person I would recommend seeing, either through lecture, training program, or just to watch his students and him show. He helped me finish training one of my horses a few years back and I have nothing but good things to say about him!" - Anon.

"I am a student at SUNY Morrisville in New York. We have a TB and Standardbred racing program that is excellent. You get lots of hands on experience and the instructors are great. I have been a riding student, but I am doing a special project with the TB this semester. I am breaking a 5 yo TB mare to race." - Anon.
